Folded Hands in Autism: Why This Simple Posture Improves Attention, Eye Contact, and Behaviour

Hands are the main tools of stimming in autism.
Free hands often mean free stimulation.
One of the most practical tools in Dr Kondekar’s approach is the use of folded hands.
Folded hands are not just discipline.
They are an attention posture.

Why Folded Hands Work
When hands are folded:
Hand stimming reduces
Body movement settles
Visual scanning decreases
Head and eye position stabilises

This creates the ideal condition for:
Eye-to-eye connection
Listening
Learning

Dr Kondekar recommends:
Three Folded-Hand Postures and Their Use

1. Namaste posture
Creates calm, respect, and readiness for learning.
2. Arms folded with palms touching elbows
Strong body regulation; blocks intense hand stimming.
3. Folded hands with finger on mouth
Encourages silence, patience, and impulse control.

Folded hands do not suppress the child.
They organise the child.
