Speech develops only by verbal listening. it doesn't develop by oral motor exercises if listening or understanding or receptive speech is poor. so first focuson listening and learning speech input before you work on output. 90% of your daily time with kid should be spent of language based listening in form of story composition and conversations to start spontaneus speech or relevant speech. speech is not about reading ro talking, it's more about having depth of verbal understanding. working on only that will help. Often parents of kids with autism and speech delay, keepon forcing lip movements to child without working on listening based learning of speech.

When the child starts getting ready to learn few words by listening and expresses with some vocalisation, parents only focus onworking on output of speech forcing the child to talk talk.. say this .. say that etc 

Parents feel that if a child with autism listens or  Learns a word right now, he should speak.

It's not so. 

Even krmal kids take 18 to 24 months to learn to talk when leane to listen has been started even at age 6 months.

So journey from listening to talking habilitation is 18 months minimum.

So sustained quality listening for 18 months , will result in sustained quality understanding by child, so that child will learn to speak effortlessly with meaning.

Working on output without working on input of sustained listening is like playing with speaker without adding files to the music player.
